In addition to Doshas and Dhatus, there are elements known as Agni. The principle action of Agni is to help digestion, absorption and assimilation with the aid of Vayu. It functions as a catalytic agent in digestion and metabolism. It is somewhat similar to pitta in its function and can be considered as an integral part of the pitta system in the body.
In every tissue and cell Agni is present. It is necessary for maintaining the nutrition of the tissues. It destroys harmful bacteria in the digestive system. As long as Agni is functioning properly the process of absorbing and assimilating of the food will be perfect. Otherwise the metabolism is significantly affected leading to undigested material and impaired body’s resistance. The undigested material is known as Ama, clogs the intestine and other channels that ultimately create toxins in the body. There are many things that depends upon Agni such as color of skin, perception, intelligence, longevity and most importantly metabolism.
Agni is a form of energy which is produced by various organelle (cells) under the influence of many exogenous and endogenous factors to yield energy either to store (growth/anabolism) or expend (function/catabolism) for the purpose of survival of human being.
